CARD IX · The Underworld
Game Of Love
You may know that love is controlling you and still be more afraid of falling without it than of remaining attached to it.
THE GIFT / THE TRAP
THE GIFTTurn to reveal
The ability to recognize dependence clearly without pretending that awareness automatically dissolves attachment.
THE TRAPTurn to reveal
Mistaking the thing that suspends you above the fall for proof that you are free.
THE QUESTION
If you cut the bond, are you afraid of losing the person — or of discovering what happens when nothing is holding you up?
THE PARADOX
The same attachment that prevents the fall is also what prevents freedom of movement.
THE SIGNS
- THE HEART
- THE GOLDEN STRINGS
- SYLVROS
- THE KNIFE
- THE PLANK
- THE CHASM
- THE CANDLE
Sylvros hangs above the opening to THE UNDERWORLD, suspended by two golden threads descending from a heart. Love is literally holding him up, but it is also deciding where he hangs. The knife makes severance possible, yet cutting the strings would also remove what currently keeps him above the void. The heart is not evil. The manipulator is his own love.
You think you’re flying — but you’re actually falling.
THE TALE
THE ILLUSION OF FLIGHT
You think you’re flying — but you’re actually falling. Love can feel like elevation while simultaneously removing control.
CONSCIOUS DEPENDENCE
I know love is controlling me, but I’m more afraid of falling without it than of remaining attached to it.
I know love is controlling me, but I’m more afraid of falling without it than of remaining attached to it.
THE HEART IS NOT THE ENEMY
The heart is not an external villain. I know my own feelings are the thing holding me, and yet I would still rather be suspended by them than lose them.
SELF-SUFFICIENCY COLLAPSES
Knowing damn well I do so good on my own becomes difficult to maintain once another person’s attention acquires power over the self.
HATE DOES NOT CANCEL ATTACHMENT
I hate you / but I can’t handle the fact that you hate me too. Hatred should create distance, yet the other person’s hatred still matters. Indifference would free him more efficiently than hatred ever could.
THE JOURNEY
GAME OF LOVE marks the threshold of THE UNDERWORLD. The question is no longer simply what do I want? It becomes: what has wanting begun to do to me?
I know my own feelings are the thing holding me, and yet I would still rather be suspended by them than lose them.

A bond may be powerful without being healthy, mutual without being stable, and sincere without being sustainable. Do not use intensity alone as evidence that you should stay.
