The clearing is fully visible and completely empty, yet the shadow of a werewolf appears to lunge across it. Other people rarely know our inner state. They see fragments, surfaces, old versions and projections, then freeze them into an image. But the self is moving while the image stays still. The empty clearing removes the excuse of obscurity: there is nowhere for a monster to hide. The threat survives anyway. Fear has already supplied the creature.

There may never have been a fixed self to lose.

THE TALE

DIFFERENCE IS NOT A DEVIATION

Difference is not a deviation from humanity. Difference is one of humanity’s native conditions. Human identity is marked by deep individual variation, and the fantasy of a perfectly uniform human type is almost anti-human.

THEY DIDN’T ACCEPT YOUR HUMANITY

The line works on three levels: they refuse to see you as fully human; they treat vice, instability, contradiction, desire or troubling impulses as proof that you are less human even though these are products of human nature; and they often attack precisely the most human parts of someone — vulnerability, softness, empathy and the capacity to be wounded.

The viewer can clearly see that there is nothing to fear — and still feels fear.

THE PAST SELF

The past self reaches back toward Arcael and THE SKY. The question becomes: is that still me — or has too much time passed? You can know a former self was yours while no longer fully remembering what it felt like to inhabit them.

GREGOR SAMSA

Sooner or later, everyone wakes up as someone they did not expect to become. Gregor’s transformation exposes the gap between who someone remains internally and what others now see.

THE SELF OTHER PEOPLE FREEZE

We are changing constantly while other people may continue interacting with an image of us that stopped changing years ago. Paranoia makes that image more hostile: ambiguity becomes threat, silence becomes aggression, difference becomes danger.

THE HOWL FINALLY ESCAPES

CALL OF THE NIGHT contained a howl that could not come out. Here, it does. What was once too shameful to voice can finally exist in public.

THE JOURNEY

METAMORPHOSIS closes THE GROUND by breaking the last stable category. The beast cannot be permanently separated from the human. The past self cannot be permanently preserved. The image others hold cannot keep pace with the person changing underneath it.

We are changing constantly while other people may continue interacting with an image of us that stopped changing years ago.
