CARD VII · The Ground
Werewolf Mania
Fear becomes dangerous when it needs a body to blame.
THE GIFT / THE TRAP
THE GIFTTurn to reveal
The ability to question the monster you have been taught to fear — and to recognize the same instincts inside yourself.
THE TRAPTurn to reveal
Believing that purity, order or righteousness can justify cruelty.
THE QUESTION
Who becomes the villain when your fear needs somewhere to go?
THE PARADOX
The quest for absolute order cannot produce anything but chaos.
THE SIGNS
- THE EMPTY STAKE
- THE ROPES
- THE BURNING FOREST
- THE CLAW MARKS
- THE FULL MOON
The stake is ready, the ropes are hanging, the forest is burning — but the werewolf is nowhere to be seen. The punishment exists before the culprit does. The fire meant to eliminate one monster has spread across the landscape. The moon may reveal animality, but it is humans who build the stake and light the flames. The hunt can become more monstrous than the creature it claims to contain.
The werewolf changes. The mania remains.
THE TALE
THE NEED FOR A MONSTER
Chaos is hard to fight. A monster is easier. The scapegoat turns diffuse human darkness into a target.
THE BEAST WE PROJECT
The werewolf embodies everything the crowd wants to exile from itself: lust, violence, instinct, madness, loss of control. If the beast belongs entirely to him, it does not have to belong to me.
A society that builds the stake will eventually find someone to tie to it.
MORAL PURITY AS PERFORMANCE
Puritanism, moral self-righteousness, antisemitic scapegoating, witch-hunt logic and other forms of exclusion are not identical phenomena, but the song connects them through one structure: project impurity outward, moralize the fear, then punish the target in the name of goodness.
ORDER BECOMES MADNESS
The more obsessively humans try to eliminate Mania, the more manic their pursuit of order becomes. Chaos does not always look chaotic. Sometimes it wears rules.
THE NEXT VILLAIN
The target disappears. The structure survives. Fear searches for another body. The werewolf changes. The mania remains.
THE WOLVES ARE NOT PURE EITHER
The wolves are tormented by Mania too. Acceptance does not require innocence. Imperfection does not cancel humanity.
THE JOURNEY
WEREWOLF MANIA turns the question outward. The problem is no longer only what if the beast inside me is dangerous? It becomes: who taught me that the beast made me less human — and what happens when a society organizes itself around that belief?
The werewolf may carry the beast openly; the witch hunt hides the same beast behind a halo.
